Hi all,

I'm reading a book about music, and I'm having trouble understanding what these sentences mean:

Вам надо свести ваш слух и ваше отрывочное знание в одну систему, чтобы уверенно подбирать не тыкаясь. Сразу подбирать. Вот прозвучало что-то и вы сразу, то есть методом тыка может подобрать кто угодно, вы хотите сразу.

Specifically, what is meant by уверенно подбирать не тыкаясь? And why сразу? Is this some method of playing?

"Подбирать" in music context means "to pick up [music, melody, chords] by ear" -- "не тыкаясь" is a very colloquial for "right away, without trial-and-error process"; therefore, "уверенно подбирать, не тыкаясь" (one needs comma here) means "to pick up [music, melody, chords] by ear with confidence and certainity, very fast, without trial-and-error, right away."

"сразу" is closer in meaning "to right away" or "at once"
"подбирать" in this context means reproducing the music you've heard by ear. In other words "guess" how to play the piece.
"подбирать не тыкаясь" hope someone will explain in better. I'll say it means to play the piece that you've heard right away without trying every note until you find the right one.

By the way, this is not a very exact translation, wiich is sometimes typical for Multitran when it comes to less-than-common words. To play by ear is more "играть по слуху", which is not the same as "подбирать по слуху". When you play by ear, you already know the melody (chords etc.) and how to play it, while when you pick it up by ear, you don;t know yet how to play it -- you learn in the process. So, it's more like "to pick up [music] by ear."

There are not too many dictionaries that cover the colloquial usage, and the text you quote is seemingly VERY colloquial.

Only one doesn't need a comma in this case. It is like 'идти не спеша'.

I'm not sure how it is called in English, but the idea of "подбирать" is that you can remember some tune and then play it (e.g., on the piano) without musical notation leaf.

In the sentences that you give the idea is that someone should play this music without mistakes right away, i.e. all the keys should be correct, even though it is the first time and even though a person doesn't use notation

In this case it's not a деепричастие (any ideas how to call it in English?), but a homonymic adverb.

No, you are wrong :) I get what you're saying, "идти не спеша" definitely doesn't need a comma, but think about a sentence like "Он шел медленно, не спеша" - wouldn't you use a comma here? The same with "Он подбирал мелодию уверенно, не тыкаясь".

Ah, I suppose it's called definitive and indefinitive clauses (?). For me, подбирать уверенно and подбирать не тыкаясь are two very different situations. For example, I always pick up a melody не тыкаясь, but sometimes I don't do it very уверенно. :)

I'm not talking about the meaning here, I'm talking about the need of a comma in a sentence like that, however senseless it is :) Though this particular sentence actually has absolutely adequate meaning, cause a person surely can подбирать мелодию both уверенно and не тыкаясь :)
