I hope this question is not too out of place in this community. I am studying in St. Petersburg in the fall and have found a possible host family who lives in the Avtovo suburb of the city. I've been told the commute from there is about 35 or 40 minutes to the center. Is this true?

I will be studying at the Philological Dept of Saint Petersburg State University (located at on Ul. Leitenanta Shmidta I believe). How far is the commute to there from Avtovo?

In general, does anyone have any opinions about living in Avtovo? Or, as always, if anyone knows of a potential host family for me in St. Petersburg, I am interested in that as well. Thanks very much.

Hi,
do you know the street your potential host family in Avtovo lives(so that i could look up shuttle bus/tube info for you)

I have just graduated from Phil Dept and many exchange students i knew used to live in Vasilievsky ostrov area, near Primorskaya metro station-this would be the most convenient for you.

Overall Avtovo is not bad, it's just the transportation problem to get to the Phil Dept.

because if you ride the tube from avtovo (or frankly any other tube station) - it will not get you straight to the faculty doorsteps- you'll need to take bus, tram, shutle bus after the tube ride (this is the most unpleasant part of the morning)

Or it's a 20 minute fast walk (weather permitting, heh))

But if you'll be able to find a family in vasilievskiy ostrov- you don't need tube at all to get to school.

if you have any questions, i'll be glad to answer!

Avtovo is not a suburb, the city is just quite big :)

Philological Dept is located at Universitetskaya naberezhnaya (University embankment). The nearest underground station is Vasileostrovskaya (you'll have to walk 10-15 minutes). It takes about, yes, 30 minutes to get there from Avtovo underground station (you'll have to change the line). So now it's about 40-45 minutes. But if your host family lives not next to the Avtovo und. st., you'll have to spend extra time to get there by bus or tram.

I suppose Avtovo is quite a nice district, it has enofgh space to walk and enough air to breathe )) It's important in a big city. But Avtovo is large, so try to ask where exactly your host family lives. Goog luck and welcome to Saint Petersburg :)

The Metro station Avtovo is, yes, about 35-40 minutes from center (by Metro).
The question (as mentioned above) is how far your host family lives from Avtovo Metro station.

Feel free to ask questions about SPb geography (contacts in my profile).

normally, you will need approx 50-70 mins to move from one point to another
but in the morning there could be traffic and you can stuck in taxi-bus(marshrutka) for undefined amount of time

once it took me 1hr to only reach the subway station from my residence (near Leninsky Prospekt)

There are several. I suggest going to http://www.livejournal.ru/ratings/communities and looking around.
