I am trying to remember how the prefix "по" works in Russian for dates. How would you say, "I will be studying there from June through December"? Is it "я там буду учиться от июня по декабру" (дательный падеж)?

It works as с ... по, and requires родительный падеж after с and винительный падеж after по.

btw, дательный падеж - "декабрю", not "декабру", there is no "декабру" form in Russian.

I'd disagree, because there will quite likely be some context before the sentence. Possibly, such sort of a context, that any attempted further formalization would make things look bad, introducing speech mistakes.

I'm a big fan of context for a reason. :]

First noun is in genitive case, second is in accusative.

"По" and "до" have different meanings.
"по" = including December
"до" = excluding December

And I don't think this is about formal or informal style.
