I'm finishing up my first year learning the language and right now i'm learning about comparing ages, but my book doesn't really tell me the difference between моложе/младше

My book mainly uses the first but then sometimes throws in the second but doesn't explain why. 

can someone explain it to me please?

I think they are interchangeable. At least, I cannot see any difference in usage off the top of my head.

My feeling tells me that "моложе" could be addressed to inanimate and animate objects. While "младше" only to animate.
As you could say:
Моя машина _моложе_ твоей на 2 года. [sounds correct to me]
Моя машина _младше_ твоей на 2 года. [sounds incorrect to me]

Hm, I don't even say «младше/моложе» about objects. «Новее» is much neater.

here's two sentences of examples from my books.

Брат младше меня на год.
сестра моложе брата на два года.

My teacher is having surgery so we're kinda left to fend for ourselves with a new guy for a few weeks. :\

For me in these sentences words "моложе" and "младше" are interchangeable and have same meaning.

also another question about those sentences, would i make the number of years to agree with the gender of the person who is being talked about

like if I said Joe is 2 years older then older then Olga would it be два or две

Joe is 2 years older then older then Olga -> Джо на два года старше чем Ольга.
"Два" in this sentence should gender-agree with word "года" i.e. to have masculine gender.

Note, that "младше" can be used not only for age comparison, e.g. "младше по званию".

Ann is 20 years old. Jane is 40 years old. It means Ann is younger than Jane.
Аня моложе Джейн. Ann is more attractive because she has youth.
Аня младше Джейн. Jane is more wise because she has maturity.
If you want to emphasize a nearness of youth you take "моложе". If you want to emphasize a nearness of wise you take "младше".
The word "моложе" use for people or animals only.
