Oct. 14th, 2008 09:19 amHey guys. So I am doing an assignment and I am having a little trouble understanding some of the questions,
For example what is this question,
Does it mean: Is it possible for them to go to the river for mushrooms with the trunk??
Another question started like this:
and the one following said:
I understand 1. but does 2. What is needed in order to buy the cow? (Refering to 1.) ?
And then this is some of the dialogue. I get the gist of what's happening, but I don't get the details.... I need to answer question number 3. from this dialogue (I am guessing):
-Конечно, ясно. Чего ж тут неясного? - говорит Печкин. А самому ничего не ясно. Ведь за грибами с корзинами ходят. А тут на тебе - с сундуком!
From the dialogue above (I think) I can answer this question, but because I don't understand the text, I can't quite understand how pechkin doesn't believe that they are not going to the river for mushrooms.
Thanks again. You guys are life savers.

There's that wonderful invention of humankind, dictionary. Any dictionary says that лес is "forest," not "river." Russians like to pick mushrooms in the forest, you see. But it's not very likely that anybody would use a trunk for that (normally, it's a basket.)
Just replace "river" with "forest," and I'm sure that the picture will clear up a little bit.

The question 2. is not refering to 1. These are simply 2 different questions.
3. Everything is clear! No questions! - Pechkin said. But indeed, it is completely unclear for him because it is not natural (commonly used) to go for a mushrooms with a chest. They needed to take basket instead of chest.

Date: 2008-10-14 04:12 pm (UTC)You understand q.#2 right. Q#1 should be Для чего нужна корова?
Печкин says that all is clear for him not to look stupid. He knows that ordinary people do not go for muhsrooms with a trunk, but with a basket.

Date: 2008-10-14 04:44 pm (UTC)so assuming 1 and 2 are two separate questions, can I answer number 2 as "they need money in order to buy a cow"

But you see, nearly everyone does not write the first question mark, assuming it's clear enough. I hope now it makes more sense.
1. and 2. you understand correctly.
In number 3 you probably miss some intonations. I hope I will not spoil you too much by providing a translation. :P
"Of course, it's clear", says Pechkin. But nothing is clear to him. Because everyone goes to forest for mushrooms with baskets. And here, wow, [these dudes went to the forest] with the chest!
