Голубец is bad slang for a gay person, yes? And it's related to the color голубой, right? I was just curious because I'm heard rumors that, if you're a male, wearing light blue can cause you to be antagonized as a гомосексуалист, and light blue is a color that occurs with worrisome frequency among the clothes in my suitcase...

Can someone explain this clothing thing to me?

Голубец is the Russian dish (food). It has no relation to gays. "Голубой" means "blue" (color) and also means "a gay".

Well, the word голубец in it's main meaning is a sort of food - meat covered with cabbage leaves, and another meanings are rare and slang. And the word голубой which means light blue color, is really used to stay for a gay person, it comes from old Soivet prisoners slang. But you shouldn't worry about the color of your clothes, indeed.

Голубец is really related to голубой, though I wouldn't define it as "bad slang". It's rather the other way round, something childish (голубой for gay would be the most neutral word).
I've never heard about the colour of clothes being related to your sexual orientation :)

Haven't heard anything about the connection between light blue clothing and perception of sexual orientation. Gay persons are often called "голубые", but to my mind it does not have anything to do with colors in normal life. I cannot even tell, what is the origin of this slang.

Голубец is a dish made from cabbage, rice and ground meat (usually in plural, голубцы).
Голубой is a slang for gay, same as the color. The concept of you being antagonized based on color of your cloths is as viable as expecting that English-speaking people will try to cheer you up because they will think you are feeling blue.

This could be just an occasional word; once or twice I've heard 'голубиные замашки' (doves'/pigeons' tricks) as 'elements of homosexual behavior' - just due to likeliness of words.

No, that is not.
"Голубая кровь" is related to the pale skin of the nobles. And through the skin it was easy to see veins, wich colour is blue.
That is why members of aristocratic families, always trying to avoid suntan by any means, were considered to have blue blood.

That’s the etymology of “голубая кровь” related to aristocrats, while I’m talking about the further usage of word “голубой” for gay people.

Nobles had pale skin, blue veins were visible, therefore they were believed to have a blue blood. So they were called “люди голубой крови”.

“Он человек голубой крови”, shortened to “Он голубой крови”, moreover was shortened to “Он голубой”, meaning noble or just rich man.

Gay people were believed to be exclusively nobles (homosexuality was considered a kind of amusement of rich men, “богатые с жиру бесятся”, you know).

That’s why we got what we got: word “голубой” used as noun and meaning gay man.

There're also words like голубчик, голуба, голубь, голубок, голубка. The last 3 are words for a pegion/dove, of which the last two are sometimes used to address beloved people or people in love. The first one can be either a diminutive of голубец (the dish) or yet another form of addressing a male person. The second is used to address a female person. I'm not sure of the exact use of these first two words. They seem to bear some negative connotation. But none of these words is commonly used to address homosexuals. Only maybe rarely in a word play.

As a live survivor of the 1980 Olympics, I can swear by Lenin's goatee that it's bullshit.

Half of the country was wearing light blue around that time -- олимпийки (light-blue woolen pullovers) were almost as prestigeous and much more accessible than American (or, more likely, Indian, because those were legally imported) blue jeans :)

I teach English in Ukraine, and yes, students here do snicker at light blue and light pink colors. I have seen students tease one another. The light blue for gays, light pink for lesbians.

While in training, we would hand kids post it notes and have them find partners. It was suggested by our trainer that we use yellow ones rather than the blue and pink ones.

So perhaps not in Russia, but in Ukraine it gives kids things to laugh at. Not sure that that translates to the adults, though.
