Hi all,

How would you say, "He went to the scene of the crime"?

Right now I have "он пошёл к месту преступления," but I have no idea if that's right or not.

And just in general, is it better to use в + accusative or к + dative in this type of situation (e.g. he went to the school, to the restaurant, etc.)?

Большое спасибо!

Он поехал (выехал) на место преступления. If you speak about detective or forensic expert it's unlikely that they go on foot.

Имхо, это верно.
IMHO, it is right.

As variant - "Он отправился на место преступления".

And... "пошёл" mean that he used his legs only as transport, "отправился" can mean that he used as transport not only legs, but and other types of transport - cars, buses, horses...

you use "в" or "на" when talking about destinations, use "к" when talking about directions (also about people or animals: пошёл к другу, к слонам (in a zoo)).

in your case, "на место преступления" and "к месту преступления" are both right, a difference in the meaning, if any, is minor.

the choice between "в" and "на" is dictated by tradition, there are no hard and fast rules. some words require "в" and others require "на" and you have to learn which is which (and like it!)

+1. This is how you'd say it in an official document, for example.
