How do I thank someone for something specific, like "Thanks for participating" or "Thanks for coming"?  I know it takes за, but I can never remember what it looks like after the preposition.

After "за" just use a noun in nominative case.

You can also use verbs -

Спасибо, что пришли.
Спасибо, что поучаствовали.

Actually last should be

Cпасибо за то, что пришли

but 'за то' can be omitted in many cases.
