Here is a stupid question. I hosted a Russian speaking exchange student a while ago, and when he got together with the other exchange students, they would always refer to as one of the other student's host as a "Dolboyob" or something similar to this. What does that mean? I can't find it in any of my Russian dictionaries. Is this an insult?

Thanks for your time.

fucking idiot/asshole - very rude; there is no literal translation/analog in English

if you are interested in further details you may find them there - http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A0%D1%83%D1%81%D1%81%D0%BA%D0%B8%D0%B9_%D0%BC%D0%B0%D1%82 (including that specific word)

Долбоёб really is a strong insult and means (inexactly, but I tried to do my best in this translation) "person who uses a prick instead of head".

Good, but I'd better say that's "мудак" (very strong insult! use only if you know what you say!).

that's when russian smekalka comes into the picture))
and about the word долбоеб
1. as it was written before, it goes for "extremely stupid, as stupid as a man can possibly be"
2. the head of SUP (that's the company which owns livejournal.com), Anton Nosik, also has a LJ. his LJ is [livejournal.com profile] dolboeb

so, d!ckhe@d in english, something that conveys more stupidity than malice? or does it mean someone who thinks of things in a perverse/sexual nature?

no, it was said that the characterization was indeed on tack, sounds more like we are providing 'less-than-stellar' hosts on our side of the pond...

Sorry, I didn't get you. What do you mean?

the students may have said that one particular host was a dunce, but the other host agrees that they are correct, so the failing would seem to be on the american side in our not providing better hosts.

It's more like "shithead", really. An obnoxious person that you find exasperating. A douchebag. Or some such.

(Pardon my French.)

"Dickhead" is "мудак". "Долбоёб" means even more stupidity :-)

it's from the word 'dolbit', which if i think correctly, means something like to drill in (information)... and then the person still doesn't get it.

dolboyob, is like a dumb fuck....
