So...I am looking at my Russian syllabus for the week, and have no clue what a доклад is.  I typed it into a translator, and it says a report.  Now my syllabus indicates no other instructions that would indicate I am writing a report.......is there an alternate meeting for this word? lol

Доклад is indeed a report or a paper. You can expect that they give you a topic for it.

доклад is usually a report that is done orally. You are supposed to write it but then you usually read it aloud and/or present it without reading.
доклад is somewhat older term before PowerPoint:)) Now presentation is, in my view, the closest proper translation.

Доклад can be "a talk", in a phrase like "to give a talk on something" or even a presentation (to make a presentation).

Also, look at these two words: докладчик and докладчица - the person (m/f) who read report aloud. Usually you will see them in program of some conference.
Verb доложить - used mostly in military, in the context of someone reports to his superior.
