Someone recently sent this article to me. In it, Aleksander Nikishin claims that there are "350 synonyms to the word 'drink' in Russian." Thoughts? I wonder if he's referring to the verb or the noun.

I thought I had read in one of Steven Pinker's books that this is a myth, much like the notion that the Eskimos have a million words for "snow".

In most cases it is verbs. Properly, any russian noun can be "synthsized" from verb. For example:
бухать-бухло
пить-пойло (actiually from "поить", "спаивать", not from "пить" directly)
nevertheless, forms like "набиралово" (from "набираться") commonly not usable because too long and complex.

IMHO, thios can be truth if author means not only strrict synonims, but also total amount of argo words surely used in each region by each subculture and social layers, words derived from other languages (f.e. «дрынчать»), etc.

the point is russians often invent new words to describe all the emotional and lexical shades of the word "drink" in a certain context.
they even say that all the unknown verbs mean either "пить" (to drink) or "идти" (to go) =)

выжрать
выпить
глотнуть
дернуть
дерябнуть
ебануть
ебнуть
жахнуть
залить
заправиться
наебениться
наебнуть
нажраться
накатить
налопаться
натрескаться
нахуячиться
опрокинуть
поддать
принять
раздавить
синячить
тяпнуть
употребить
хряпнуть
... and many other, that I can't remember in 5 minutes.

Well, not exactly. Ёбнуть (so as Ебануть) means "hit" or "strike" someone or something really hard.

Ёбнуть кого-либо монтировкой по затылку - Hit someone with crowbar in the back of the head.
Ебануть (or Ёбнуть) водки - get shot of vodka.

you are interested. maybe you are interesting also, but it depends :).

about your question - (imwho) "christie, don't you want to go and get some shots of vodka with me ?"
and, dispite the fact that the question is not adressed to me, my answer would be "на пляже, тёплую и из мыльницы ? нет, не хочу."
