Курсовые means specifically "papers" rather than coursework in general. There are two types of papers in Russian universities: "реферат", which is your run-of-the-mill paper; and "курсовая" (short for "курсовая работа"), which is a big paper one writes towards the end of the semester and which in theory builds upon everything learned in a particular course.

uhuh...this is in a secondary school in Britain (ages 11-18). the coursework referred to is the part of the examination done in one's own time without supervision. then of course there are exams. so i suppose курсовые would be appropriate in this case (and the native speaker writing seems to think so) but if you know of any better synonyms then they would also be useful

I see. Well, I'm not sure what synonyms might express the concept better; your friend has probably found the best possible equivalent. Part of the problem is that writing papers is not customary in Russian secondary schools (or at least it wasn't when I attended in the late 80's/early 90's), so the terms have to be borrowed from the university level.

"Defended" rather than "protected" would be the best (literal) English translation for "защищал". The idea is that the курсовая is like a mini-dissertation. (And now that I think about it, "term paper" pretty much exactly captures the meaning of "курсовая".)

можно сказать = so to speak
на бегу = hastily
