Can someone please explain the following?

Is this, "пытающимися" a conjugated variant of "пытаться"? If so, what happens to it? If not, what is it?

улыбаться is "to smile", but what happens with the conjugation here? : "Он мне улыбнулась"? Where does the "nol" come from?

1. is an adjectival participle (причастие), in plural, instrumentative case. these forms are not usually included in conjugation tables, because they are, for all intents and purposes, adjectives.

2. it's imperfective vs perfective aspect thing, улыбаться vs улыбнуться.

Улыбаться has a perfective counterpart, улыбнуться. That's where улыбнулась comes from.

Пытающимися is the instrumental plural of the present participle of пытаться.

Do you mean the second question? There's a lot of ways to mark aspect in a Russian verb. I'm not sure one can find a table or anything. Your best bet for for now is a larger dictionary.

Perfective form means that the action has been performed once, and its performance was completed. Imperfective form means that the action is still being performed, and is far from completion. Therefore:
она мне улыбнулась = she smiled at me (once, and ceased to do so.)
она мне улыбалась = she was smiling at me (many times, and kept doing so.)

"Он мне улыбнулась"

minor note: this is an incorrectly gendered past tense. If HE smiled at me, it would be "улыбнулься". Otherwise it should be "Она мне улыбнулась." :)
