If I wanted to describe a cat, one who is both black and white would I literally say "black and white cat"? It sounds weird to me. Is the use of "and" necessary or can it simply be implied by saying "the black white cat"?

I hope this makes sense, I don't have the ability to use Cyrillic from my mobile.

you wouldn't use "and" - you'd say just "чёрно-белая кошка" =)

Even if you cannot use Cyrillic nobody forbids to write the transliterated Russian, e.g. "chernyj" "belyj" etc. Sometimes it will be better understood this way.
