Can anyone direct me to a website that has a good listing of Russian literature that wouldn't be too difficult for a first year college student in his second semester to handle? We read a story, Mimohodom, in class today, and I really enjoyed it... I'm looking for more that's more or less similar, including literature or poetry. Of course, there is no way to gauge where I am at this point because teacher teaches Russian differently, but we're through the cases and verbal aspect, but just before motion verbs to give you and idea. It would be especially great if the site had some way of noting how difficult each of the texts would be.

Thanks if you can help!

Rich resource. Reading L. N. Tolstoy is something I'd recommend, because his language is relatively easy to comprehend even for a foreigner. His sentence constructions are less complex than that of many others. And, of course, he's a tells a good tale.

For examle, "Богу или мамоне?"

His style is horrible though and his prose is awkward and hopeless. Also his moral teachings are corny and boring, bordering on hypocrisy. Besides, some words and constructions are obsolete which does not help language learners at all.
I would recommend something lighter and brighter, like this: http://www.lib.ru/KOWAL/ (especially the short stories).

Maybe you'd like some reading for children.
For example, one of my favourite writers - Nosov:
http://www.lib.ru/NOSOW/fantaz.txt - short stories
http://www.lib.ru/NOSOW/nezn1.txt - the novel "Приключения Незнайки и его друзей" (Adventures of Neznaika and his friends). It's long enough but in an easy language, and quite entertaining, in my opinion:)

P.S.
It seems that the short stories on http://www.lib.ru/NOSOW/fantaz.txt are quite inconvenient to read, and badly scanned too, so if you're interested, you'd better use this link:

One does notice a Dickensian style, i.e. descriptions of minute details that a native 21st century consumer, used to the highway speeds of our multimedia world, can find inhibiting.

From the point of view of a foreigner, who in any case is not capable of following the high speed of a multimedia presentation in the target language, i.e. Russian, Tolstoy's slow trot is likely to be a welcome opportunity to follow at a manageble pace.
