Forgive me if this is old news to you, but I just became aware that translate.google.com now supports English<->Russian translation.

The interface is well done: individual sentences in the translated output are highlighted when the mouse cursor moves over them, and balloons offer original text.

There is news.google.ru too.

Well...it's much better (and faster) than I am...

I think I'd use it if ther was a swedish-russian alternative. I'd just scrap of funny stuff like "zdes' my idem", and it would be much better than my "human" translations (faster,and and less basicgrammar misstakes, the kind you keep doing out of lazyness if you learnt a language as an adult). A very useful tool for people who allready know the languages fairly well.

P.S. and don't think there will be fewer mistakes with an automatic translator. There will be more, and, what is much worse, you will never know about them. I tried this translator on a piece of text (nothing extraordinary) and got a piece of spectacular crap. It is up to you, of course, but I would never recommend using automatic translators to anyone.

It would be fewer mistakes if I used it as a TOOL, but naturally I would have to work on the text after the automatic translation.

If you read my post you would have seen that I wrote that i would scrap of "poetomu zdes' my idem". (and write maybe "poexali" or something instead)

I would know about the misstakes: as I wrote in my post it can be a TOOL for faster translations for PEOPLE WHO ALLREADY KNOW THE LANGUAGES. But only a tool, it can not substitute me.(nothing can...;)

But the auto-translater wouldent make stupid basic misstake, like I do when a forget to put things in accusative, for example.

But as I said, since I'm not an native english speaker either, it is probably best not to use it.

Если Вы читали мой пост вы бы увидели, что я написалa, что я бы убрала формулировку "поэтому здесь мы идем". (а может быть, написала бы "поехали" или что-то такое)

я бы знала о ошибках: Как я писалa в в моем посте он может быть ИНСТРУМЕНТОМ для быстрого перевода, ДЛЯ ЛЮДЕЙ, КОТОРЫЕ УЖЕ ЗНАЮТ ЯЗЫК. Но лишь инструмент, он не может заменить меня. (Ничто не может ...;)

Но автоматического переводчика не сделал бы глупых основных ошибок, как я, когда забываю винительный, например.

Но, как я уже говорил, поскольку английский у меня не родной язык, наверное, лучше не использовать автопереводчика.

Ну, не совсем плохо получилось, по-моему. Автопереводчик с моими исрпавлениями.
Если бы я сама писала, получилось бы столько или больше ошибок.
(Я не говорю что текст хороший, я сравниваю с собой, не с идеалом! Идела я не достигну ни одна, ни с автопереводчиком!)

The Russian-to-English is similarly awful. It's entertaining to read how it translates some things, but other than that is mostly worthless. (It's also funny to see what it does with Ukrainian if you're using the Russian-to-English tool. :))

Here's a fragment of relatively simple and straightforward English text:

I soon ran almost headlong into our landlady just outside the door of her own sitting room. She was glaring up at the second-floor door from whence the cacophony was emanating, looking rather less alarmed than irritated, and perhaps even a little injured; and although I was by no means surprised that Holmes was the source of her agitation (rather the reverse, in fact), I WAS rather taken aback when the kindly woman announced that she had no intention of serving tea that day -- a restorative that I had been quite eagerly anticipating, during my walk home from a day-long medical symposium.

And this is what the automatic translator made of it:

Я вскоре стали почти на голову, хозяйка сразу за дверь собственной комнаты. I hope that you know Russian well enough to see that the Russian version does not make any sense whatsoever. One would not even be able to understand what's going on in the original text.
