Hi,

Do you know any typical Russian cookies that are made traditionally around Christmas and/or New Year? Do you have recipes?

I want to surprise my family with home-made Russian cookies, but I am far from being an experienced cook, so I’d prefer easy recipes.

For new year we've got Салат Оливье, Селедка под шубой, as for drink - Шампанское (Champagne).
I don't have actual reciepes for salads, but you can google for them :)

Well, cookies are not common for New Year in former USSR, it's better to cook olivie salat. By the way, New Year is much more important for us than Christmas some families even don't celebrate Christmas.

Yes, I can read Russian. :) I’ve been looking for small translation projects, and I think these will probably be good ones.

My favorite cakes have been experiments—I have a recipe for a basic cake, and then I add things in and see how it tastes. The last one that I really liked had molasses and fresh ginger in it.

Hmmm. The торт медовик recipe calls for «0,5 порошка ванилина» in the заварной крем. Is порошка being used as a quantity here? (Another recipe for the same thing said «0,5 пакетика порошка ванилина», but none of my dictionaries know what a пакетик is.)

Ah, okay. 1g of vanilla … there was a comment that said to use 0,5 ч. ложка or something of it, so I wrote that down.

And no, I’m holding off on cooking until I’ve translated the recipes. ;) I’ve learned my lessons on cooking before I know what I’m doing.

Do you know aspic? You boil three types of meat, then cover it with "jelly" (broth + gelatine) and cool it. So it is cold collation and it's great with mustard or horse-radish and vodka (electively). Yummy!
But my American friends use to eat only fruit jelly and this one seems strange for them.

And one of the main things in celebrating the Russian New Year it is viewing old film " Twist of fate or With a lung the ferry! " - "Ирония судьбы или С лёгким паром!")))- there was a known stage when one character - Ippolith, takes a shower dressed in a coat.

Also in this movie there is one more famous russian dish - fish-in-jelly:). And in other scene main hero says to main heroine - What a muck this your jellied fish!

У... С прошедшим новым годом,э но ничего, скоро будет Старый Новый Год =))13 января.

Русские блюда:
Оливье, винегрет, холодец, мясо по Строгановски (бефстроганофф),икра красная, огурчики солененькие... мандарины. Водка и шампанское=))

А еще есть салат из крабовых палочек.
