Help for the weary traveler

My company has a "vocab list" of airport terms for our inbound students. I'd like to update it, because I think some of the terms are a little bit silly. Some things I haven't been able to look up in dictionaries (especially the compound words), so different translations of those would be especially helpful.

I've listed different ways of translating the essential vocabulary and am hoping you can provide feedback on the various terms. I'd like to expand this so that it's also useful for Russians traveling abroad. It would be nice to include both British and American terms, for two reasons:
1) to be useful to Brits and to learners of British English
2) to be useful to Americans who are communicating with foreigners who learned British English (the situation I am often in!)

So if you know of a British version of an American term, that is also helpful.

In the end I hope to have a short glossary of terms for travel(l)ers that can be put on a card the same size as an airline ticket, and I'd be happy to pass along copies to anyone who's interested in one.

Please keep in mind that many of the students using this brochure are new travellers, and may not even know the Russian terms for some things (which is probably why in some cases there are full definitions instead of translations).

прИбывающие (the other dictionaries gave you the correct version). Прибывать is to arrive, пребывать is to dwell.

layover is definitely not привал - привал is something that hikers do when they stop walking and sit down to rest.

план-график or маршрут is the closest to "itinerary". Basicaly it is a list of all your arrivals and departures with times, airport names etc.

Here are my variants. If something is missing, it means that I agree with the only variant.

airline - авиакомпания, авиалиния is rather a flight

airport terminal - терминал аэропорта or siply аэропорт. Аэровокзал is oudated

arrival(s):
arriving airplanes - прибывающие рейсы (not пре...!)
arriving passengers - прибывающие пассажиры (not прилетающие, passengers cannot fly by themselves)
area of the airport - is usually marked as Прибытие

baggage carousel - багажный транспортер

baggage claim check - багажная квитанция

boarding (the plane) - посадка (на самолёт) - brackets match

boarding card, boarding pass - посадочный талон

carry-on baggage, hand baggage - ручная кладь

check-in (n.) - регистрация.
Also there is a set expression “Регистрация билетов и оформление багажа“ which is always used in broadcasted voice messages like “Начинается регистрация билетов и оформление багажа на рейс ... авиакомпании ... в ...”

checked baggage - багаж, сданый в багажное отделение (a suggestion, no direct equivalent)

concourse: общий зал if that is BEFORE customs, зал ожидания otherwise

customs, luggage inspection - таможенный досмотр (таможенная is incorrect since контроль is masculine)

departures:
departuring airplanes - отбывающие рейсы
departuring passengers - отбывающие пассажиры
area of the airport and any other signage - отправление

gate - just гейт

gate agent - if this is a person who checks the boarding passes, he can be named контролёр. No idea othewise. No direct equivalent.

itinerary - generally, маршрут. If it means only the times and places printed in the ticket, then maybe something like реквизиты рейса but this sounds incoprehensible... If this word is used only in expessions like “please, carefully check your itinerary” then it's absolutely OK to use the present long variant.

layover - ожидание между рейсами or пересадка depending on the situation. Definitely not привал - it means only camping layover.

monitor - табло. Not all of the monitors are screens (экран)

overbook - No direct equivalent. Suggestions: (v., perf. (imperf.)) (за)бронировать сверх вместимости (n.) бронь сверх вместимости

oversell - No direct equivalent. Suggestions: (v.) продать билеты сверх вместимости (n.) продажа билетов сверх вместимости

oversold flight - No direct equivalent. Suggestions: Рейс, билеты на который были проданы сверх вместимости

NOTE FOR 3 PREVIOUS: Do not use words like перепродать, перебронировать - they mean “to resell”, “to rebook”

rebook - перебронировать

security check point - контрольный пункт безопасности

US gateway airport - (US airport where the CIS participants arrive???) Generally - ключевой аэропорт в США

US transit airport - Транзитный аэропорт в США (current version is misspelled, no signs of US)

X-rays screening - Suggestion: Рентген-контроль

Some airlines in Russia still have remains of Soviet-style bureocracy and its lingo, but "авиакомпания" is most common now.

"представитель" is better, "сотрудник" is more like unspecified airline staff.

airport terminal
"терминал аэропорта" is most widely used, and "аэропорта" is often omitted. "аэровокзал" is pretty much obsolete and "аэропорт назначения" is obviously a mistake -- it's a mix with "destination aiport".

arrival(s) [arriving airplanes, arriving passengers, area of the airport]
It's usually used with some disambiguation in Russian, like "зал прибытия" for arrivals area of airport or terminal, "прибывающие рейсы" for arriving flights and so on. You can use "прибытие" in corresponding form as umbrella term, however, if one can see the context. The same is for departures.

baggage carousel
"транспортер багажа" is pretty much official. Common use is "багажная лента".

baggage claim
A: зал выдачи багажа
Exactly.

baggage claim check
All your dictionaries mix "багажный ярлык/багажная бирка", which is luggage tag, with "багажная квитанция", the ony right translation.

baggage tag/baggage label

A: зарегистрироваться
"Зарегистрироваться" would be Perfect aspect. If you don't want this, use "регистрироваться" instead.

Usually, as I understand, it means "главный зал" or "переход" from the waiting area to the gates.

H: выход (because this is what I've always seen in Russian airports)
"Выход" is simply "Exit" and can be used just EVERYEHERE, not only at a boarding gate. for this usually "Выход на посадку" is used. Sometimes a "посадочные ворота" can be used, but it's basically an anglicizm.

itinerary
"Маршрут" is best, "план-график" is again a bureacratic lingo.

layover
It's "задержка" or it alternatively may mean "пересадка с ожиданием" -- there's no specific term for this in Russian.

monitor
"Табло" in general is rather obsolete word, but it's still alive in transportation and sometimes sports. So better use it.

overbook, oversell
"Перепродавать (билеты)" is right one.

US gateway airport
It would be "Аэропорт въезда(прибытия) (в США)"

X-rays screening
A: просвечивание багажа с помощью ренгена
"РенТген-контроль" is better

No. "Flight" has only one direct translation and it's "рейс". Translating it as "авиалиния" will only confuse everybody.

In transportation context (especially in companies staff lingo) it's perfectly acceptable in "overbook" meaning. Companies hardly resell planes of flights to other. ^_^

"Перепродавать (билеты)" is right one.

I suppose, that translation in lingvo.yandex.ru is more correct

"продавать больше билетов, чем имеется мест; регистрировать большее количество (пассажиров, клиентов и т. д.); перебронировать (рейс)"

But usually transliteration of overbook(ing) is used (овербукинг).

That sounds to me like there are too many people actually on the plane (as opposed to too many people with tickets), which is a scary thought.
