Are there any Russian textbooks out there that anyone would strongly reccomend? Preferably useful for self-teaching purposes?

I started out with "The New Penguin Russian Course." It seems to be alirght for self study with reading and writing for basic to intermediate suff. It is fairly cheap too.

For example, I once started to learn the French language with fairy tales, it's easy to read them=) you can try to read russian fairy tales or english fairy tales, but in russian. in our university all foreigners study russian with them=))
