I'm trying to take the sentence 'Ирина пишет письмо сестре, которую она любит,' and turn the bolded portion into a participle. Does the following sentence accomplish that?

Любящая сестру Ирина, пишет письмо ей.

I think it's wrong, but am not sure how to make it right. Any help would be appreciated!

First, there's no need for comma here. Second, word order is definitely wrong, correct one would be "пишет ей письмо". And third -- in Russian participle constructs almost never used in this way, even if grammatically correct. It just looks awkward, if it's not an exercise from the textbook.

You kind of turned it around, it's not the bolded part that you've made a participle. On the other hand, the only participle that would work for the bolded part is a passive one: любимой.
Ирина пишет письмо любимой сестре.

By the way, you only need a comma before the participial construction (and also after it if the sentence isn't over): ....Ирина, любящая свою сестру.
Ирина, любящая сестру, пишет ей письмо.
But: Любящая свою сестру Ирина часто пишет ей письма.
You should also bear in mind that such constructions are rarely used in speech. You will use them frequently in writing, though.

Grammatically right, but sounds very artificial -- not very Russian, at least :)

Я знаю, но вопрос был именно о том, как в данном случае использовать причастие.

According to the rules of this community, we can post or comment in Russian, but we are expected to provide an English translation as well. This is because we are expected to be polite with those community members who cannot understand long Russian sentences yet.

The question was not how to use the participle, but how to convert a certain part of the sentence using participle. Anyway, when explaining how to do that, we also have to explain that those constructions are not in active use, at least not in spoken Russian.
