How do you write in russian characters when you are typeing on a keyboard. The only way I can think is to go to a google translater and copy and paste. Is there any way you can type it yourself from your keyboard?

This is keyboard with Russian letters. YOu may just draw these letters on the same keys :)
But firstly you should setup Russian input. Somewhere in control panel, I believe... In russian version of Windows there's no such problem :)

Windows have complete set of keyboard drivers. Just go to Control Panel/ Regional and Language Options and install Russian keyboard on the Languages tab (click on Details... button, click Add... in appearing dialog and select Russian). After this you could switch your keyboard by Alt-Shift combo and type just fine -- except your keyboard wouldn't have Russian letters on it, but you can find or make stickers with it.

There sure is!

(The following instructions assume Windows XP of one flavour or another)

--Click Start, Control Panel
--Click on "Date, Time, Language and Regional Options"
--Click on "Regional and Language Options"
--Click the "Languages" tab
--Under "Text services and input languages" you'll see a "Details" button. Click on this.
--Click "Add" under "Installed Services"
--For "Input Language" select Russian
--For "Keyboard Layout/IME" select "Russian (Typewriter)" if it is not already selected (it should auto-select)
--Click "OK"

--You'll now see "Preferences" below. Click "Language Bar" and make sure that "Show the Language Bar on the desktop" is selected. Click "OK" until all the windows are closed, saving settings when it prompts you to.

Now, down near your system tray on the bottom right hand side of your screen, you'll see a little button that says "EN". If you click on this, it will give you options for which language you want to use to type in.

Remember that this only changes the setting for the active window. If you're in something like Wordpad, for example, it will change the language to Russian only for wordpad.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any questions about the steps here!

If you're using Windows, go Control Panel -> Regional Settings -> Languages -> Advanced. Set Russian (Win1251) as your computer's 2nd language. Now, you're all set. The only thing is to know which Russian letter sits on what key of your keyboard. The standard Russian keyboard layout (which is is based upon how frequent are certain letters used in the typing) is clearly shown on the picture linked in the previous comment. You can mark Russian letters on the keys yourself, or buy transparent stickers with Cyrillic letters from one of Russian online stores in the U.S.

If you're using Linux, then find someting like

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Keyboard0"
Driver "keyboard"
Option "Protocol" "Standard"
Option "XkbModel" "pc104"
Option "XkbRules" "xfree86"

in /etc/X11/XF86Config and write after this the following:

Option "XkbLayout" "us,ru(winkeys)"
Option "XkbOptions" "grp:ctrl_shift_toggle,grp_led:scroll"

Then use <Ctrl+Shift> to switch input language. If the language is Russian then Scroll Lock on your keyboard will be on.

here are some instructions that will install a cyrillic keyboard, like the standard windows one, but it works phonetically with the latin alphabet! b=б, t=т, w=ш, etc.. I type MUCH faster this way than trying to guess where the letters are!

You can also edit it with Gnome's keyboard switcher app. ;)

w=ш isn't phonetic; it just looks similar. The most sane mapping of w I've seen is to в.

If you're using Linux

What the f**k is Linux? ;-) The instruction you have posted applies to XFree86 running under any UNIX-like OS.

umm... you are kidding right? latin V is phonetically B in russian. W is an exception since there is no wuh sound in russian...

Right. But in transliterations, W often becomes В.
