[identity profile] specialkatsc.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] learn_russian
Hello, I'm new to this community. I was procrastinating and someone suggested this to me. I've been learning Russian for a long time (5-6 years) and next year (actually the end of this August) I'm going to Russia to study abroad for 10 months so I'm trying to step up my outside of class studies a bit. I feel like I just don't know enough WORDS. I know how to use them (gramatically) but I always find myself in the middle of a sentence having to use an English word :( Anyway, Hello everyone!

first, never let yourself use english words.
whenever i come across specific word I don't know.... I make myself find another way to say it in russian.

second. practice practice practice.
Read, speak, write... with practice, and repition, you'll find new words just falling into your vocabulary.

gl!

If you're interested in finding a way to learn vocabulary, Interlex (http://www.vocab.co.uk/) is quite efficient.

Thanks for this suggestion, and post! I feel the same way about my vocabulary, so look forward to using this! It will sure beat writing endless lines of words by hand...

Actually 'Nashe Radio' (Наше радио). Радио is neuter.

Get yourself a Russian (prefferrably only Russian)-speaking boyfriend.
It should be easy for you to do in Russia, especially as you have an amazing sex drive (http://specialkatsc.livejournal.com/profile). Thiis would enrich all aspects of your Russian enourmously and quickly.

Questionable advice. You only get lots of language practice that way if your Russian bf is a good conversationalist. Not all of them are. And even so, you might end up with a lot of vocabulary that is not really helpful in polite company. ;)

I recommend reading popular novels (as opposed to classic literature). You pick up more everday words (instead of super-high-level language that will have everyone telling you "you talk like a book!") and it gives you something to discuss with people when you get there.

Browse around www.lib.ru and see what they have that interests you.

correct is Санкт-Петербург or Петербург or Питер (slang)
and not Владимер correct is Владимир

Welcome to Saint-Petersburg. It`s the best city in the world :))))

Proven advice. Not questionable at all.

By just reading books you may never get to learn how to use these couple of hundred words and expressions that are the core of any language. Don't worry about the vocabulary - it will come afterwards, naturally.

You'll notice that she's not in Russia yet. How likely is she to find a non-English-speaking Russian man in Northampton, Massachusetts, who can enrich her vocabulary to the point that transitioning to Russia would be easier?

When she's already in Russia, it would help - certainly much more than dating an American while she's there, who she'd most likely speak English with. But it's not everything. It still depends on whether the person you're dating is a good conversationalist. I, for instance, dated a guy in SPB who couldn't carry on a conversation about anything except cars. I learned lots of car vocabulary, but not those "regular" words you need for a conversation.

In the end, the books can't hurt, and they're a lot easier to learn from than websites and blogs, where no one spells anything correctly.

at lib.ru there is Viktor Pelevin, and paig of "Generation P"/"Babylon". Babylon is english translation. There is really modern and good russian there, but trouble is that it's mixed with slang. I think slang can be easy separated with english transaltion.
