Does anyone have any experience with any English-Russian/Russian-English speech-to-speech, or text-to-speech, and etc. handheld translating devices? I've been looking at some of these from Ectaco and to say that the prices are quite high would be an understatement --I don't want to put a decent amount of money into something that I am unsure of.

Any recommendations or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated!

What exactly are you looking at? Would you provide a link? Thank you. If it's what I'm thinking it is, it's not worth it, but I want to make sure first.

I tried one two years ago - it was not satisfactory. Today they can be improved a little, but...
Anyway, such a device would work as a personal translator - not the thing you need if you are trying to learn language yourself :)

I bought the E-R-G dictionary a couple of years ago. It's been pretty cool. I mostly use it for the dictionary function (without using the speech). I also like the organizer/metric/temperature conversions. I've been happy with it.

It was about $175.00 when I bought it. I was in Moscow when I bought it. I tested some of the others. While they seemed functional, they just didn't seem worth the price. Heck, for $600, you can take a course in the summer. :)
