Can anyone please tell me or link me to reliable information concerning how far 1000 USD will go for a 3-4 week stay in Moscow and a few days in St Petersburg?

I will have accommodation covered aside from the few nights I spend out of Moscow. I do not plan on spending money on commodities necessarily when I can spend it on travel and sightseeing.

Also, can anyone recommend a community on Russia where questions such as the one I have posed are more suited than in a community primarily on language issues? :-P

Thanks in advance for any help you may provide. :))))

28 thousand roubles (which make one thousand USD) is pretty much OK for 3-4 weeks, if your accommodation is covered.
Using this site (http://www/all-hotels.ru) (which is entirely in Russian,) you can reserve a room at a mini-hotel somewhere in downtown St.Pete for a relatively reasonale price (like 1000 - 1200 roubles a night.)
Avoid expensive "English spoken" restaurants, go with fast food, and you'll save enough for sightseeing (note that museums and excursion companies charge foreigners more than Russians.)

I think he meant this site (without the extra "/"): <http://www.all-hotels.ru/>. And he's right about food, although I wouldn't say you're even confined to "fast-food." There are plenty of places where you can have a nice little meal for 150-200 rubles. Best to combine a few visits to those places with the fast-food and теремок блинчики kiosks. Mmmm....блинчики.

I'm also a fan of the крошка картошка stands.

How well do you speak Russian? When going to St. Petersburg, you can bargain with the бабушки who hang around the platforms to rent a room for a few days for around 700 rubles, which is also about the price of a плацкартный билет. At least, it was about 750 rubles for a round trip the last time I went, last summer.
