Historically it is a contraction of "God save you," but yes, it now means "thank you."

True Спаисибо is Russian for "thank you" but to reply with a "you're welcome" - you would want to say "Не за что!", or "Добро пожаловать!"- Best of luck with your Russian! :)

Wrong. "You're welcome!" as a reply to "спасибо" is "Пожалуйста!". "Добро пожаловать!" is used for greeting only.
