[identity profile] jejuneraccoon.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] learn_russian
Hello,

I don't know if this is too off-topic, but if so, please delete this entry. I was hoping to familiarize myself more with Russian culture and was hoping someone could recommend some popular Russian music to me (other than t.A.T.U.), both old and new. I already did some research on-line but would like some more suggestions if possible. I know musical preferences vary, but any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

There are a lot of bands and singers in Russia.
You should be more concrete. What kind of music do you prefer? Should the bands make their song in russian or in english?
:)

New:
Мельница, http://www.melnitsa.net/ . Definitely.
Сурганова и оркестр. http://surganova.su/
There's not much new and good music, and it's underground mostly.

Old:
Nautilus Pomlilius, http://www.nautilus.ru/
Кино, http://www.google.ru/search?q=%D0%B3%D1%80%D1%83%D0%BF%D0%BF%D0%B0+%D0%BA%D0%B8%D0%BD%D0%BE&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:ru:official
(I fail to choose just one site of these)
Аквариум would be fine, too.

All of them are buyable from ozon.ru and most - from allofmp3.com :)

Or you might want to try Птица Си here and now :)

Can't say you'll certainly love it, thought :) But one should really try :))

You should be more concrete.

Every time I run into this word it reminds me of nothing but executions practiced by Cosa Nostra ;-)

Good stuff, but not much of an average Russsian music. I mean, there's no way to get a clue of the main tendencies out of listening to Мельница. ;>

PS: I mean mostly Мельница/Хелависа etc. Love'em, anyway.

As for rock, why not Пикник or Машина Времени/Макаревич as well?
Pretty sure, any mp3 search site will have them.

It's because of my bad English, I believe. Maybe "concrete" is not a right word. :)

Why show average/poor examples? I'll better show best ones.

And Мельница is just a topping of rising russian folk iceberg. I hope other bands of this direction will soon be visible too :)

Пикник is hard to understand, it have got a very tricky lyrics.
I haven't listened to Машина Времени much.
And ДДТ is not understandable without a good portion of russian culture+history knowledge. That's why I haven't mentioned them.

Is lyric meaning (and poetry level) important to you? Mayby you have intention to pick up some Russian this way? This case the early Aquarium (before 1986) is highly recommended. If you're oriented directly to music and to is novelty, I can recommend Auktsyon (http://www.auktyon.ru/) and... well, Inna Zheklannaya (http://www.inasound.ru/).
All this stuff, of course is rock and post-rock, nothing to do with Red Army Choir etc.

I was just thinking that [livejournal.com profile] wallfloweresque had been looking for an idea of Russian music in general. If that - Мельница is not an example of average>>>

As for "tricky lirics" - you can say that about almost any of rock bands.

Hmm.. Have anybody named Авария, Ария, Аквариум?

Are you sure it's easy to find out how to spell "Любэ" in cyrillic without knowing?>>>>

Well, average for whom?

If you'll quiz 15 years girls in-street, you'll probably get 100% for some trash like Фабрика Звезд. But if you ask here, in this community, people who listen to Мельница or Аквариум dominate people listening to попса in the order of magnitude :)

And [livejournal.com profile] wallfloweresque probably want to know what's popular for our social/cultural layer :)

Ария and Аквариум were mentioned.

It's getting funny how we discuss the intentions of [livejournal.com profile] wallfloweresque while [livejournal.com profile] wallfloweresque is keeping silence ;>

There's zvuki.ru; I'm not sure how 'authorized' the mp3s are, but Russia's not so big on the copyright thing, anyway... Also, allofmp3.com has a nice selection of Russian (and Western) digital music at fairly inexpensive prices (at least, compared to ITunes!) I think you'll find most songs mentioned at either of these sites. I'll... leave the recommendations to others on this one :)

Zvuki.ru is 100 per cent legal. I happened to know them, and I know that every single track they have is legally licensed.

I second the recommendation for Кино, as the lyrics are easier to understand than some other groups.
