How many words are there in the russian language that mean "to try"

for clearity's sake.

In English, the Oxford Canadian Dictionary defines “to try” as:
1) make an effort with a view to success 2) make an effort to achieve 3) test or experiment 4) make severe demands on a person or quality 5) examine the effectiveness or usefulness of for a purpose…

… and etc etc etc.
