Is there a word in Russian for "one-night stand"?

Interesting there seem to be so many variations. Are any of them considered not too slangy? "One-night stand" is understood by pretty much any English speaker, I think.

There is no uniform equivalent, that's for certain. The common language isn't that liberal yet, I guess.

they all are slangy. Not vulgar, but not official as well. If you need something "pathetic", than probably "одноразовый секс" (one time sex) will suit.

Actually, I don't think that any of the given answers are really direct equivalents of "one-night stand". I don't even think that the direct equivalent exists in Russian.

In my times, there was "пистон" (though it did not mention the whole night at all, just a single casual intercourse :)), but it's mostly out of use now.

But it doesn't have to do with the sex!!!!
It is a kind of performance in the town which doesn't have a permanent troupe. It is translates as "разовый выездной спектакль, гастроли".

There's a pretty lame translation "роман на одну ночь"; you can also say smth like случайная связь, случайный секс

It's strange the words that get borrowed. Sometimes I wish other languages would borrow words from English that weren't just about sex and drugs.

Well, believe me, other languages (about Russian I know it too well:-(( ) borrow too much words from English without real need for that, and not only about sex...
And even if they were only about sex, so what? There`s nothing wrong with that. Actually, I believe, one-night-stand is better, that an attempt to build a relationship (which will always, sooner or later, cease to erxist in a very painful way and break your heart. And when it`s a one-night-stand - well, you know, that it is only for one night...)

It's just that it seems to give people the impression that English is inherently crude or something, as if that's all we have words for.

It also surprises me how many Europeans are fluent in English profanity, although other than that they can't say more than "hello."

Hm, well, it seems that I can understand your feelings...
But still - please, do not get too upset! :-)
Because English curse language is too poor and primitive, due to very low amount of words and idioms.
Try to learn Russian swearings` vocabulary and you will see that! :-))))

With my current job I get to see lots of teenagers, and every once in a while some interesting slang slips out. I heard "зашибись" for the first time this weekend. :)

Any time anything is not clear to you - don`t hesitate to ask.
"Зашибись!" - hmm... how to translate... kind of "very cool!". It is not applied to persons, as we do not say "Он/она - зашибись!" - but about a thing or an event, it`s o.k.
There is sort of a synonym - "заебись!" - but this is a real curse word.

Yeah, my recruiting partner explained to me what it meant, but I have to admit I was a little startled. Natalya noticed I didn't understand the word, and turned to me in the interview and said, "That's cool."

I said, "What's cool? And what's this word, za-whatever?"

She said, "Зашибись. It means 'cool'."

It was a funny moment: I was thinking, "Oh my gosh, this girl just used a slang word, and one that's slangy enough that I've never even heard it before," and Natalya was obviously trying not to laugh.
