so we're having a whole community learning Russian? awesome... I feel like having made a drastic blunder having joined this bandwagon - and i hope you guys wont' bury me in your questions. Okay, I am Russian and plus to it a teacher of Russian lingvo and literature. Well, actually I dropped the university after couple years.

Okay, an idea's just struck me while I was wirting this. We will trade language stuff. Right now I am trying to recall what cool youth slang some American students taught me last summer. Sorta "I'm game"... Does that mean something like "I'm on it" ??

Kind of. "I'm game" is basically saying you're willing to do something. For instance, if you're with a group of friends and trying to decide what to do some night... Someone suggests going dancing, you could say you're game for that.

In other words, you're not overly excited or enthusiastic about it, but you don't have any objections to it either.

"Wanna go get some sushi?"

"Sure, I'm game."

great. the memory's functioning properly. now about the word "dog" I heard that, sorta "Hello Shae-dog!" i feel it doesn't have any specific meaning, but anyway, just briefly - in what situations can i use that?

Some people use it to express friendship, in a cool fashion....but I would honestly never use it myself. A lot of people will say something like "Hey, Shae-dog!" when they see their friend, kind of like "Shae, what's up!". But I've only seen it being said to guys, and usually within a certain culture or attitude reference point...

If a person goofs up or makes some kind of minor mistake, they can admit their fault by saying "my bad".

For example, at a picnic outdoors,
- We have sandwiches and drinks, but did anyone remember napkins?
- Oops, I forgot to bring the napkins. My bad!


"Dog", or sometimes "Dogg" is like чувак... sort of.
Yo, what's up dogg? = Ну че, как живешь, чувак?

"I'm game" is kind of archaic at this point.

"I'm down" is what's being used.

... and the meaning is more like "Sure that sounds great, lets do it!"

The whole dog, dogg, and dawg thing originated in ebonics/street talk. Eventually, the rest of us started using it, too. Now, it's not too common in ebonics... And people sometimes make fun of other people who say, "Sup dawg?" or whatever.

it's definitely not that enthusiastic. steppinrazor gives a more accurate definition. (at least that's how it's used in this part of the country.)

hey, Tykva ))) i've been at you LJ and it was fun to see some American writing in Russian!! You know, you speak Russian very good, i noticed just couple minor mistakes, they don't harm the sense of what you're saying, so...

I was really impressed by your dilligent punctuation, sice i myself ignore it often. Well it's understandable why people study English, let alone that this is one of the easiest language to learn to speak. But what makes an American studying Russian??? Beats me...

Why study Russian? 'Cause it has the coolest sound to it, and besides, there are so many ways to swear!

seriously - a wider variety of swearing can't be a good reason for someone to spend years storming a whole foreign language. So what was that? I mean how come?
Here it is almost necessary thing for anyone who wants to consider himself an educated man to speak english. That's a world's language now. But Russian?.. There must be some special reason, i guess. As to sounds - consider Swedish, i belive this is the most beautiful language in the world.

Well, of the three, the English verison is certainly the least appealing!

I was half joking about the swearing, although I do enjoy learning unusable words. Russia and it's language have been obsessions of mine since childhood. There really isn't a good explanation; I just have to accept that I was meant to love it.

Spanish is the practical, second language for Americans to learn, but I've never been one for practicality))

It also means a certain degree of eagerness, I guess. Can't imagine anyone replying "I'm game" to "The team meeting is at 2PM" at work. :)
