What's a good translation for "yay!" other than "ypa"?

I think that "ypa" is VERY accurate, and can't think of anything else... "ВАУ" corresponds to "WOW" which is different, in my opinion.

"Ух ты!" is much closer to "wow". "Ура" means rather joy and triumph than surprise and awe.

Hm... I always thought "ух ты" was more for like, the literal "Oh yooou"

No, not really. It is a general exclamation. E.g. you could say "Ух ты, какой сильный дождь!" (Wow, it's a real downpour) or "Ух ты, какое большое яблоко" (Geez, that's a really big apple).

Hmm.
Simply Ё, then.
Whish refers to a generally obscene expression ;-)

those are different. "ёу" seems to me to be a positive interjection (like "yays", "hi", "peace" etc), and "ё" reminds me of "ё-маё" or "ё. т..ю м..ь" (and its variants) which is obscene

Ach so. Never heard this first one, then. Maybe it's local or very new (recent teenage slang)?

yes, derived directly from american "yo" exclamation.
hmm... i hardly believe you have never heard anything (at least jokes) about modern hip-hop culture in russia, they use this exclamation rather often.
"ёу, ди-джей, поставь мой компакт, эта музыка меня не вставляет!" - doesn't it really tell you anything?

But of course. I have heard it from my students a lot, but they reproduce it strictly as Ё or, more likely, Йо - I know that for sure, because I have seen it written by them many times :) (they were assigned to write a paper on modern teenage "culture", you see, so many of them have chosen to write on the hip-hop/rap subject.)

lol ^__^
when concerning slang or neologisms you never guess whether you spell right or wrong (since in most cases it's not defined), so we may treat "йо" and "ёу" (or rather "йоу") as graphic variations of the same word.
