[identity profile] kaersaij.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] learn_russian
My friend recently moved to Washington DC. (She doesn't do the Lj thing). We met in Russian class in Indiana, and she's interested in having some Russian television available in her apartment to keep up with the language. I figure its possible, but don't know how to research that. I wanted to first see if anyone in this community who lives in DC is knowledgeable of this. At IU, we only had the RTVi channel, which the school had to order a card for, and that was alright. I'm wondering, what are the options with both channels and availability?

I don't live in DC, but I think the following is still correct:
She can order Russian channels through DishNetwork.
She needs to have an account with them, have the right dish installed and pay separately for the Russian channels.
Usually it's about $15 a month per channel.

If she has cable, MHz has a Russian news hour every weekday. As far as I know, there aren't any local Russian stations, but I could easily be wrong about that.

And if she's in school, there's SCOLA with a similar thing.

If she has a high-rate Internet access in her apartment, the she can try this link http://www.webtelek.com/tv.php?first=0
There are all Russian TV channels there + some from ex-USSR and international ones.

I got used to watch channels from this page very often, while in office (I don't have TV at my workplace) - most of the channels works very stable.

ok, I see :)
I've never watched the same channel for then 10-15 minutes - I just don't have enough free time, while in office.
On the other hand I don't understand why it should stop after 30 minutes of quite smooth running...

signal breaks out, screen freezes.
some channels you can't even connect to- sends message "all available ports busy", or something like that.

prerecorded news are usually fine, though.
