How to say "my computer froze"? What's "to reboot"?

What's the blanket term for Instant Messenger in Russian? What's the preferred IM of Russians? What's the verb: "to instant message"?

Компьютер завис.

Перегрузиться (перегрузить компьютер).

Messenger будет мессенджер - not terribly original. :) Mosr Russian speakers prefer ICQ, which they call "аська" or "ася". Beat me if I know why - it's the worsest possible messenger in my opinion. Or, probably, they share the last place with AIM...

It's historically so. ICQ was the first to the market, so everyone just ended up using it, plus it had decent support for cyrillic.

Yeah, I wonder why they are not using Poisk-2 still. Such a devotion for what was used first...

Перегрузиться

or перезагрузиться.

Компьютер завис is literally "computer hung".

MSN and Yahoo. Better-looking, less complicated and more smoothly working. I'd never even have ICQ if not for the fact that my mother has only it. I went for 4 years happily without it.

Gaim (http://tieguy.org/blog/index.cgi/433) has them all-in-one. It doesn't really matter which ones my friends are using -- I can aim, icq, irc, and jabber them all from the same place.

Yeah, and Trillian and Miranda. I know. I just don't like them. :) It's not a hassle for me to keep my messengers separate, not to mention that these 4-in-1 programs don't support LAUNCHcast like the original yahoo messenger does. At least last time I tried trillian it didn't.

Hihihihi.... we now say 'он завис' about a man, who is so surprised, that he can't say a word) Or about a very greedy man, who doesn't want to help or to give sth)

why dont you just cross post your russian posts from your own blog?

I was going to do that but then the community sort of flat-lined

we need someone to yell "CLEAR!"

I must say as a person with reasonable computer skills, Gaim is fab! Cyrillic support is ok, though it seems to vary dependant on which program the person on the other end is using.

Перегрузиться is shorter and simpler, перезагрузиться is more accurate translation of reboot (since boot is загрузка, and the basic meaning of перегрузка is overloading). If you look reboot in a computer dictionary, you will see перезагрузка, перезагрузить.
Personally I prefer перезагрузиться, but most people are less accurate today...

(Перезагрузить is a transitive action: перезагрузить систему; перезагрузиться is more colloquial and used when you simply say "reboot" with no object.)
