How serious is "to death" in the phrase: «устала до смерти»? Is this type of hyperbole as common in Russian as it is in English (scared to death, etc)? Or are there just a few set phrases?

Yes, it is a hyperbole. You can also say "напуган до смерти" in Russian - it's quite common expression. Nothing serious, really:)

It's serious to the same degree as if you say "I'm dead serious!" in English.
