I've decided to make a Russian LJ in which to practice my Russian. I'd like people to check over my entries and point out mistakes. My Russian LJ is ya_stranen, and I swear to God, if that doesn't translate as "I'm strange", I'll kill someone. I'll try to keep it interesting and update daily (which means I'll probably have to do things everyday and not just sit around). Thanks in advance!

haha, that's true that "Я странен" would be translated as "I'm strange", but if i translated "I'm strange" to Russian, i'd put it "Я странный". "Странен" sounds strange, really.

Just FYI, "Я странен" is a direct quote from Griboedov's "Woe from wit" ("Горе от ума") -

I don't intend to lessen the value of our literary heritage, but really, at present we don't speak the same language as Griboedov did.

No one says we do. But naming one's LJ with a quotation from a book looks perfectly OK to me. If someone decides to call his LJ "Аз есмь", for example - would you object, too? Besides, it's not your LJ or mine we are talking about, therefore, its author has a right to call it whatever he wants.

Well, in fact we weren't speaking of how the journal is named but rather of how is the phrase translated (I assume you did read the post attentively). And i even didn't object that the author's translation (i.e. the Russian to English one) is correct. All i did is said that at present "Я странен" sounds a bit strange. Since you agree with my point, is there a necessity to continue the discussion?

as i read whole above i don't see what was the point you disagree with. we just seem to speak of the different items. if you don't have the same feeling, prove it to me (by the action i described in the first paragraph).

you seem to be intending that the phrase that is not in use at present shouldn't be assumed old-fashioned.
if it is so, maybe you should consult your dictionary for the word "old-fashioned".
