I've bought various russian translations of books originally in english when I've been in russia, thinking that reading them (with dictionary in hand) might be easier, if I've read the original. I'm presently working my way through "Bridget Jones' Diary" in russian (I figured it was contemporary, funny, and relatively easy and though that is proving to be the case, the british-slang-in-russian-translation is kind of tricky.) I also bought "The Hobbit" in russian, though I swiftly realized that was a mistake ( I didn't think about all the poetry and made-up languages in it when I bought it, though the edition is gorgeous and I'm glad to own it.)
Can anyone reccomend books that were written in english somewhat recently, popular, of *some* literary quality, and have been translated into russian very well? What english books in russian translation are especially highly regarded among russian readers?

Stephen King short stories are certainly ok, provided you enjoy this kind of literature.
The quality King's translations, though, is very different from one book to another. Anyway, at least half of the texs presented in http://www.lib.ru/KING/ are of decent translation quality.
Unfortunately, the great and unbeatable Dark Tower is not very well translated. Anyway, I'd recommend the translation made by Ruzhzhe rather than Veber's.

You should try The Chronincles of Narnia - the translation "под редакцией Натальи Трауберг".
It is done in a really good language.

I'm reading Neil Gaiman's American Gods at the moment and I like the novel very much. Though I'm not sure it would be easy reading for non-native Russian reader.

You should avoid most of the Douglas Coupland translations - they're awful. Julian Barnes usually gets a good treatment, as well as Nick Hornby and Ian McEwan.
