Here's an odd question for you: What are some popular [or unusual] names Russians give their pets? I'm adopting a kitten shortly, and I've been trying to come up with some names that don't suck. The list is unfortunately extremely short.

Edit: Sorry about that buggered ljcut. Thanks [livejournal.com profile] fucking__snow!

Iken
Omega
Omegakitty
Mogget
Unstable
Moto
Max
Glitch (What's the russian word for a computer glitch?)

I don't see any list in your post, but common names for a male cat would be

Murik (Мурик)
Murzik (Мурзик)
Vas'ka (Васька)
Tishka (Тишка)
Barsik (for a long-haired type) (Барсик)
Persik (for an orange Persian cat) (Персик)

For a female cat

Murka (Мурка)
Mashka (Машка)
Dashka (Дашка)

These are all the kitties I have encountered that I can remember... For some reason, most of my friends had male cats named Tishka :) My own cat was Murka.

Also, thanks to Alex Exler, the most famous cat of Russian internet is Bublik (Бублик). Bublik actually means a kind of bread, kind of like a bagel.

A good female cat name is Фенька (Fen'ka). A male with red hair could be Рыжик (Ryzhik).

I had a cat named Alisa (it's Russian form for Alice). Now I have two, a male cat Murik (or Murchik as a variant) and female cat Shurka (or Shura).

I know a cat named "Штопка" - because she has bright patches of white, red and black fur all over her body and it reminded her owner of a patched blanket :).
("Штопка" - this is how special thick threads are called which are used for darning clothes)

Well, my list: (the capital letters for the stressed vowels)

ЧернЫш (Chernysh) - for a black cat
КУзя (Kuzya)
СЕнька (СемЁн, СЕня) (Sen'ka, Semyon, Senya)
ДЁма (Dyoma)

Female cats can be:
БЕлка (Belka) (which actually means Squirrel) - for a white cat (my friends' cat is Belka, she is nice)
МУська (МУся) (Musya) - for any cat. A very common name for cats, who live in the street.
СОня - (Sonya) for the cat, who likes to sleep :), 'cause that means "sleepyhead". Except "sleepyhead", that is also a diminutive from the name Sofia.

My own cats were named:
НИкас (Neekas)
Сенька
ФАня (Fanya) (ФАнька, НафАня)
Макс (Maks)

And the bonus:
my pretty dog's name is ЛимOн (Limon) - Lemon! :)
Despite he is not yellow at all :)

Does the name Матроскин come from Трое из Простоквашино or is it older than that?

Had a Russian friend with a cat named Шерхан, or Шехан, or something similar. It was named after the tiger from The Jungle Book, but it was much more Russified.

Also, she called it by going ks, ks, ks.

That's the standard Russian way of calling up to cats :-)

I know, it doesn't
but when I was making this name up 10 years ago, I did use the word "Russia" as a base for a name
it doesn't make any sense now, but who cares?
not Roosha :)))

A lot of time I would pet my cat, I would call her Kryska (Крыска), which literally means "little rat", it sounds similar to Kiska (Киска) ("little cat") but sounds better - Kryska-Muryska (Крыска-Мурыска) :)
