I am currently studying russian, but I would love to meet someone who would like to communicate with me and help me with the language. I am going to st. petersburg this summer, and I want to improve my russian as much as possible before i go. also, i'm not sure if this is the right place for this question, but are there any places/museums/sites in st. petersburg or moscow that i absolutely must visit?....i would love to hear everyone's recommendations. Thanks!

Well the Hermitage and the Russian museums are definitely a must (If you're going on a study abroad program, you'll get a student ID, which means you get into Russian museums for free or for really really cheap)

The museum of political history is really interesting as well.
Kunst Kamera (beware the pickled baby exhibit... You have been warned)

There are many many others, but I haven't been in over a year so my memory is a bit fuzzy

As for nightlife,
THere's a fabulous jazz club on Furshtatskaya ulitsa called Sunduk which has some really amazing guitarists and the strangest bathroom you'll ever see. Just... trust me.

Other places that are kind of fun (or at least were last year)
Purga on the Fontanka and Griboedev off of ligovskii prospect.

Are you going on a program and how long are you going to be there?

I haven't been to either of these places myself yet (another month and a half!), but

St. Petersburg: The Hermitage
Moscow: The Moscow Paleontological Institute (I recognize everyone does not share my overwhelming love of critters long-dead, so YMMV)

If all else fails you can go to http://www.translit.ru and do everything manually from there.

Suggest you to take an excursion around the city; you could probably figure out what interests you most, and ask the guide to give you an advice.
There are different sorts of excursions; like "Pushkin's Saint Petersburg", etc.; you could check some of them, and therefore discover different cities in one :)
In addition to the museums, you could visit cathedrals, they are absolutely stunning.

Check out this website too:

Good luck :) Come to Moscow too :)

Oh yeah, The Moscow Paleontological Institute is really wonderful place to visit, especially for a person who likes dinosaurs! :)
Here (http://www.paleo.ru/english) is the link to the english version of their site.

You absolutly mast visit The state Hermitage (Petersburg; a basis of this museum - assembly of pictures of imperial family), Tretyakov's gallery (Moscow), museum of the fine arts of a name of Pushkin (in the same place).

Good luck!

p.s.I have a journal which I write in Russian, this journal has been created to communicate in English.
