Quick question. I'm doing some exercises right now dealing with participles, and they have the following: работающей for a девушка. Is the feminine form actually like that? They just want me to insert the participle in its correct form in a couple of sentences.

Looks like a declined ending (can't tell what case since you didn't include more info), and anything following a husher is mutated, hence, the soft ending...

Well they just gave me the word like that. So it ISN'T in it's normal state, yeah? The proper feminine form would be работающая? (The nominative)

No negative connotations at all. Strictly neutral. What are the negative connotations in English? I've never felt that there were some, or I haven't think about it.

Yes, the proper feminine form would be работающая, neutral - работающее. Работающей is declined (позвонить девушке, работающей в соседней комнате - dative, услышал от девушки, работающей в соседней комнате - genitive, встретиться с девушкой, работающей в соседней комнате - instrumental etc.) Note that this is the present tense form; the past tense form is работавшая.

More mildly, it can be just an ambitious careerwoman, or, yes, a prostitute. (Or some combination of the two :)) I can think of instances where it's still a neutral term though.

"Career girl" doesn't have any negative connotations at all. As a matter of fact, it's not even correct English! :P

The thing closest to "career girl" would be a job placement person of some sort. But "career girl" sounds weird.

"Career woman" and "businesswoman" are virtually the same, and neither has negative connotations, except that some extremely politically correct people would say "businessperson" rather than "businessman" or "businesswoman" so as not to specify gender.

Well, my professor in Canterbury, Kent, England, would not agree with you on that.
See below, "career woman" was recognized as a legitimate phrase by missa_gorightry, and it is nothing more than a politically corrected version of "career girl".

negative connotations? 'работающая девушка' doesn't mean prostitute;-) it can, but not always, in some situations only) we always say about this kind of girls: 'девушка по вызову' ;-)
