Alright, I don't understand what the "у" means in the sentence. What does it translate to?

E.g.:

1.) Чтобы всё как у растений.

2.) Хочу как у них

"Хочу как у них" would be "I want it how they have it." У is a preposition; You use it with the genitive. For example: у меня друг, у тебя врак.

Really in these sentences you should attent not only "у", but "как у" as whole. "Как у" means nearly as "in the same way" or "in similar way".

"Чтобы всё, как у растений" means "in the same way as plants have".

Pay attention to the comma: it should present before "как у" in most cases.

*laughs* Sorry. My brain was working in pronunciation mode. But hell, at least my brain's accepted it's pronounced врак. Just gotta get it to accept that it's spelled враг now.

preposition "у" is used here for Genitive case. У кого? У Мэри. (У Маши есть кот - Masha has a cat) У чего? У стола (У стола четыре ножки - A table has four legs). "У" is also used as "near" (like "около", "рядом") - У стола стоит стул (There is a chair near the table). "У стола" in this sentence is Genitive case too.
