preposition "у" is used here for Genitive case. У кого? У Мэри. (У Маши есть кот - Masha has a cat) У чего? У стола (У стола четыре ножки - A table has four legs). "У" is also used as "near" (like "около", "рядом") - У стола стоит стул (There is a chair near the table). "У стола" in this sentence is Genitive case too.
