I need help with the concept of 'for.' I know if you want to give a gift to/for someone, you use the dative case. But what about with the concept of for an event? Is it 'к' then dative?

What about 'for Tom for his birthday.' Is it 'тому к его дню рожденя?'

or
Тому на его день рождения (= Тому на день его рождения)

I think, your version is nearly right. In Russian it usually sounds as "Тому ко дню (его) рождения" (его is optional, because the dative case of the word Тому indicates already that Tom's birthday is implied.)
