Hi, I'm reading an article on icons and having difficulty with the following sentence. I wonder can anyone help me out with it. Thanks.

"Кто видет лишь внешнюю оболочку этого содержания, тот недалеко ушел от почи тателей золоченых риз и темных пятен."

"He who only sees the outer shell of this content, has not gone far (=is akin to) the worshippers of gilded ornaments and dark spots."

An example of atrociously bad Russian as produced by native speakers who can't write. :(

My best (2 minute) attempt at the literal translation of the sentence: "One who sees only the exterior shell of that content has not gone too far away from the admirers of gilded chasubles and darkened stains". The author is trying to reprove/reproach the reader against "superficiality" of some sort but I must admit that the russian original is also rather awkward (in my opinion)... perhaps it is the lack of context.

"почитатели" - the one, whole word.
Fans, esteemers, idolaters, admirers and so on.
