I don't know how correct or incorrect this is, but someone told me that the legend of the pheonix (eternal firebird that rises from its own ashes) was a Russian myth. Can someone tell me if this is true or not?
The phoenix originated in Arabian culture. Russian mythology gave birth to the Zhar-ptitsa, the Firebird.
The difference is that the Firebird actually has a feminine persona and can shift in appearance from woman to human-sized bird. She causes bad luck to those who see her without her permission, and her song can lull anyone/thing to sleep. She doesn't die, like the Phoenix.
To aclarar, just google the topic! You can get links to Amazon, etc. where you can purchase some books.
For a couple fun books (NOT Russian) check out: Orson Scott Card, "Enchantment" Mercedes Lackey also wrote a book called "Firebird" I believe
yup, and make it Russian mythology, not Rusian mithology. Then you're guaranteed to find something :)
BTW in Russia, they say that Russia has no mythology, only fairy tales :) (since there is no Big Ancient Book of Myths: the earliest attempts to make one out of oral tradition are as ancient as early 19th century.)
There is "Veles Book" (книга Велеса), discovered in 19th century, but actally wtiten about 10th century (could mistake here). It "writen" on wooden tables.
Check out this site : http://paganism.ru/ (http://paganism.ru/) and link section on it.
You're sure? Could you point on some info about it? PS: I have "Veles book" with comments and historical info at home; I'll check out that info. Author is professor, but he is some kind of pagan too .)
