[identity profile] aunil.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] learn_russian
Hi Guys,

I was just wondering if you could help me with this problem.
I've been learning russian for three years now and I have never had russian keyboard on my computer. I tried to install it once, but it requires me the windows 2000 cd-rom, which I don't have.
So I was thinking if someone of you could send me the drivers required. ( i think it requires files named like this c_855.nls or something).
I really have no idea if this can be done, because I don't get along well with technology, but, you know....

If you can help me to fix this ( I have windows 2000 ), please let me know and I'll give you my email address to which you could send me the files I need.

Many thanks to everyone :)

Marta

download it and put into a temporary directory, then tell the installer where to look for it, lemme know if you'll need other files.

Also, make sure to virus-scan the file, even if I or Dalai Lama swears by it, never accept files from anyone online without virus-checking them!

Installing keyboard & nls support without intallation cd is a pain in the butt.
For Russian NLS, you will need at least c_1251.nls, c_866.nls and kbdru.dll, and who knows what else.
If you don't have Win2000 CD, borrow it from sombody who has it.

There is an alternative russian keyboard driver - for ЯВЕРТИ key binding. It does not require a Windows CD-ROM, since it's stand-alone program.

The problem with this driver is that it binds each English key to a corresponding letter in Russian - so if you press W, it'll give out "B", if you press R, you'll receive "P" and so on (that's why it is called "ЯВЕРТИ" - these are bindings for keys QWERTY). BUT majority of Russian keyboards have so-called "Windows" key bindings - ЙЦУКЕН - which, of course, is different from ЯВЕРТИ, and after you buy a Russian keyboard, you'll have to learn keys positions' again.

If you have only English letters on your keyboard, ЯВЕРТИ driver is perfect. But if you already have Russian letters on the keyboard, you'd better search for Windows CD-ROM.

If you're interested in that ЯВЕРТИ keyboard driver, write me: ahitech (at) gmail (dot) com.

Here's an alternative for you - a virtual keyboard. Follow the link to download it, install and enjoy a virtual on-screen keyboard! If this link is bad, go to the root of the website (in Russian only, I think), then go to a download section (скачать) and download it. Hope it helps.
