Hello! I've been learning Russian for a year at school, and instead of that sating my interest, it's just been getting worse, as I'm sure you all understand. Still, somehow it only just struck me to look for livejournal communities :)

I've already got a question: is there a good Russian/English dictionary you'd recommend? I have the Oxford Starter Russian dictionary and it's terrible, it's got so few words that it's useless for translating even grammatically simple song lyrics. I'd really appreciate any advice. Thanks.

My instructor raves about Kenneth Katzner's English->Russian/Russian->English dictionary. All of the entries are based on American English, so I've found it more accurate in [a few] certain instances than the other dictionaries, which are often based in British English. I would definitely recommend it. It provides all the irregular conjugations and declensions clearly and concisely, and there is even a very handy case chart for nouns and adjectives in the front of the book. This is a big, and relatively expensive dictionary, but I think it's a good investment.

I say that the harper-collins college Russian/English English/Russian dictionary (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0062765280/qid=1091014590/sr=8-9/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i9_xgl14/102-3021743-8258505?v=glance&s=books&n=507846) wonderful, but it may be hard to find, being as it has gone out of print. However, I think Harper Collins has put out a newer Russian dictionary with a larger section on grammar.

This sentence, unfortunately, doesn't sound correct.

"на" gives an impression that you direct someone somewhere.

Like: "направляю вас на курсы русского языка!" - I'm sending you to Russian language courses.

Did you mean something like:
Поздравляю вас с началом изучения русского языка!
