I know that this has already been posted probably, but I was just wondering if you were supposed to roll the R's in Russian or not. A simple yes or no will do.
Thank you. I was listening to a song and it KINDA sounded like they were rolling them but I couldn't tell. And then I realized I actually didn't know because I never get to speak Russian (only read it). Thansk again!
You are welcome. I was in the middle of cleaning the mouse so the reply was too short for my verbose personality :) You may also notice that "r" following a consonant is being rolled more than one following a vowel. I actually never thought about it until I learned German and noticed two types of "r"s in that language (though there the relationship and the sounds themselves are different).
Really? Thats very interesting. i never thought about that. I was thinking more specfically to the beginning of the word Robot, where it kinda sounded like they did, but not quite you know? And also in govaryat they kinda did but not so much. Thank you!
When I was 6 and was about to start school in Moscow, I spent 3 months with an instructor learning how to pronounce "r" the Russian way (rolling with the front part of the tongue), because until then I was saying it the French way (the back of the tongue), which for some reason was considered typical of Jews. I guess Yiddish may have borrowed the French "r" from the German language, I don't know.
Interestingly, the classical Sankt Peterburg way was the French "r", but this sort of faded away with time.
Thats probably because a lot of the Russian Royal family spoke French or German, not Russian (random things you learn in a European History class lol)
I pronounce my R's the English way, though if need be I can roll them easily because Spanish (almost) my second mother tongue. I know they wouldn't be rolled like the French (which I'm having a little trouble with in my French class lol) but would they be similar to the Spanish?
Even though I'm a native Russian speaker, I pronounced it the "silly hick way" until I was eleven years old. Mother's influence! I made this weird gargling sound in the back of my throat...
