for some words you have to put stress in an unusual way when in professional slang.

usual | pro
кОмпас - компАс (sea)
асИмптота - асимптОта (math)
добЫча - дОбыча (oil/gas etc)
компЫ(computers) - кОмпы

well lots of people use асИмптота.
but our university's teachers(not all of them) pronounce like асимптОта.
sounds wierd but adds some mathematical flavor to it.

I pretty well know what asymptote is, being the student of maths faculty. I just told that _асИмптота_ sounds weird to me. And асимптОта doesn't adds mathematical flavor at all, it's just our common way to pronounce. However found some discussions on the inet about this word... very strange news :)
