Not only that -- even in my high school days back in the 1970s I was taught that participles (and subject clauses) are strictly a feature of written Russian, not oral speech at all. So, people not just avoid that -- this is what distinguishes written Russian. Which does not mean that one has to overemploy participles in written Russian; and in the example given by the original poster, participles are certainly overemployed.
