Dear all,

What do you think is the best American equivalent for зелень? The dictionary gives "greens, herbs," but I am wondering if зелень in Russia usually refers to a specific type of herb (e.g., green onion, celantro, etc.?) or the general category of green herbs? Thanks!

It's the general word for green herbs

It's context-dependent. When you go to the grocery, "зелень" usually mean parsley, cilantro and dill (and sometimes green onion).

In some cases this is just a distinctive characteristic of an object (e.g. "зелень лета" means that you usually see a lot of green during the summer unlike any other season).

Sometimes (especially in poetry) it's the way to emphasize that the object is not "simply green", but "very-very green" (other colors can be used that way too, see: белизна, голубизна).

“Greens” and “herbs” are both good if you speak about grocery. E.g. “зелень для супа”, “greens for the soup”.
“Green” — if you speak about vegetation in general or refer to the color of an object. E.g. “Guerillas were hiding in the green” — “партизаны укрылись среди зелени”. “Green of thy eyes” — “зелень твоих глаз” etc.

"Greens" is more of a leaf vegetables and is usually named "суповая/салатная зелень" in Russian, while "зелень" in general is closer to "herbs" -- parsley, dill, celery greens, scallions, cilantro, etc.

"Зелень" can mean both green color as a general concept, and the culinary term as well, in which case it refers to the kitchen herbs such as scallions/chives, celery greens, parsley, cilantro, dill etc. Though cilantro is a divisive herb in Russia, as many find its powerful smell disagreable, so the Big Three of Russian "зелень" is scallions, parsley, and, especially, dill.

As people already wrote above, in cooking "зелень" means any green herbs and leaves, mostly dill, parsley, lettuce and green onion, sometimes cilantro, spinach, sorrel and other green things.

Generally it can be any green leaves and other garden stuff ("Зелень за окном").

Slang meaning is "dollars" due to their color.

Generaly... Everything you can put into soup - зелень, into tea - травы - herbs. And (it's important) зелень is just fresh herbs.
